History of the Alert™ Catheter

Dot Medical was founded in 1997 by Ian Rankin and now has an established reputation in several fields of medicine. The Alert™ Catheter was originally supplied to Dot Medical in 1998 by EPMedSystems Inc, a US based Electrophysiology company. Originally intended as a better alternative to External Cardioversion for the treatment of patients with atrial fibrillation, it soon found a niche in the Catheter lab with Electrophysiologists who wished to conduct mulitple cardioversions during complex ablations. Over the years, the number of hospitals conducting Internal Cardioversion has increased markedly. This is partly to do with the general increase in the number of Electrophysiological studies but also because Internal Cardioversion seems to be very effective in patients who are overweight or obese. As the probablility of occurrence of atrial fibrillation increases with age and as society is becoming more obese, the number of procedures requiring Internal Cardioversion is only likely to increase. In July 2008, Dot Medical acquired the Alert™ Internal Cardioversion business from EPMedSystems Inc and started manufacturing the Alert™ Catheter in England in 2009. The acquisition included all the Intellectual Property and global distribution rights. Having established a relatively strong base in the United Kingdom, Ireland and France, Dot Medical is currently establishing distribution channels in Canada, Eastern Europe, Scandinavia, Germany, Italy, and Greece. Having recieved ISO 13485 Certificates of Manufacturing and the CE mark for the English version of the Alert™ in June 2009, Dot Medical is now developing a new Energy Delivery Device (Companion-3™ ) and investing in the development of new types of Internal Cardioversion Catheters.
